If you’ve spent a Tuesday morning at South Philly or attended any of our virtual WODs, then you know Coach Sandra! Sandra’s fun and engaging personality combined with her careful attention to detail (not to mention epic taste in music) make her a strong presence at Fearless Athletics. Keep reading to learn more about the 2015 Festivus Games CHAMP (ask her for tips if you’re competing this year!).
What brought you to Fearless Athletics?
One night almost 10 years ago after our weekly soccer match, fellow coach and best buddy Abny Santicola and I headed out to grab a beer. The bar we went to was next to Fearless Athletics and we chatted with Wil while he was closing up shop. Abny joined the next day, and eventually convinced me to join; it was one of the best decisions that I ever made.
Who/what inspires you?
Resilient and compassionate people. Outside of Fearless, I work for the American Board of Internal Medicine. During this pandemic I have found inspiration from the healthcare providers serving on the front lines. Over the past year, I have heard a number of harrowing stories—the resilience and compassion of these professionals continue to awe and inspire me.
What are you excited about right now?
The change of the seasons, being vaccinated, and the possibility of traveling again.
What is one goal you hope to achieve in the next 12 months?
I need to improve on my kipping pull-up; the goal would be to get five consecutive.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is holistic. It’s more than just physical exercise; mental health is an integral component.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could bring only one piece of fitness equipment with you, what would it be and why?
A dumbbell because it is the piece of equipment that I use most. It is incredibly versatile, providing endless possibilities to incorporate into a great workout.
What is one thing people may not know about you or would never guess?
When I feel overwhelmed, I put on a headset microphone, pick a good pop or country playlist on Spotify and sing and dance around my house like a rock star. Bonus trivia: I was on a home improvement show, Kitchen Impossible
What are you listening to right now?
Any song by Taylor Swift …
