The Thief of Joy

February 10, 2021

President Theodore Roosevelt famously said, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” and perhaps the biggest thief of joy is not the comparison to other people, but rather the comparison of our present self to our past and future selves. I used to be able to hit a 300 pound back squat/I can’t wait until I am able to hit a 300 pound back squat. Or I used to be able to fit into this pair of jeans/I will be happier when I can fit into these jeans. This week’s challenge is to try to meet yourself where you are right now. It’s something we can borrow from our friends in the yoga community. The idea of observing—without judgement, without assigning a label like “good” or “bad.” Easier said than done, of course, but give it a shot. You are where you are, and though that might be a result of where you’ve been or could inform where you’re going, it neither diminishes nor negates your where you are at present. It’s the tiny habits that create change, so focus on what you are doing today—right now—to create the change you wish to see in the future.

Fearless Eating

Shoutout to Fearless member Dave Marks for sharing his recipe for Blue Cheese Stuffed Buffalo Chicken Meatballs. The best part about this recipe? It’s made in the crockpot, which means it is practically begging to be part of your next meal prep. Try using feta instead of blue cheese, or using a gluten-free breadcrumb alternative.

Fearless Movement

The challenge this week is to pick something—anything—and do it without judgement. Go for a one, five, or 10-mile run. But don’t time yourself. See if you can just move for the sake and joy of movement. No comparing your mile splits to last week, or where you think your splits *should* be. Can you move without assigning judgement and self criticism? Try it out and report back!
